Ike J. Ahmed, MD on Anterior Segment Imaging with the RetCam

In an interview with Dr Barry J. Linder, Ike J. Ahmed, MD shares his insights in glaucoma and anterior imaging using the EyeCam, an extension of the RetCam product line. Assessing the angle using gonioscopy is difficult to actually document. Dr. Ahmed describes several pilot studies comparing the results of grading the angle via clinical gonioscopy vs. goniography using the RetCam. High sensitivity and specificity in the ability to detect occludable angles has been demonstrated. OCT and UBM are certainly useful, but are more difficult to compare to gonioscopy vs. digital goniography. Angle images can be collected by ophthalmic technicians and evaluated elsewhere, thereby enabling large scale screening. Images collected by this means will enable the physician to follow a patient’s response to treatment by accurately documenting the angle at each patient visit.
